Shirley Hamilton, age 89, passed away March 26, 2024 with her family by her side. Shirley was born in 1934 to Bill and Mary Reints in Waterloo, Iowa and resided in Des Moines, Tampa, New Braunfels, Sun City Georgetown and Austin.
Shirley graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master of Social Work at the age of 50. She specialized in Alzheimer’s and related disorders and worked with veteran’s suffering from spinal cord injuries and PTSD at Tampa’s Veteran Hospital.
Shirley thoroughly enjoyed life and traveled the world until dementia began to affect her personality and ability to function alone. With her background in Alzheimer’s she suspected the outcome but it was difficult to accept.
She was eventually able to again find peace and enjoyment in music, nature, laughter and the people around her. Much love and thanks to the Pavilion Memory Care staff and Magnolia Hospice caregivers. You know who you are.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Cathy Rose (Jeff), son, Chuck White (Jody), four grandchildren, Chuck White, Misty White, Aaron Rose and Claire White, and two great-grandchildren, Charles White and Lexi White.
Rest in peace, Mom. You are loved.
A private memorial will be held at a later date and Shirley will be interred at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery alongside her spouse, Charles Hamilton (WWII veteran).
A tribute donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
